Mercedes "Mercy" Athena Thompson Hauptman is the protagonist of the series. She is a coyote shapeshifter (walker) with Native American heritage, which allows her to transform into a coyote at will, independent of the moon. Mercy owns and operates a Volkswagen repair shop in the Tri-Cities of Washington. She was raised by werewolves and has connections to multiple supernatural communities. Mercy is tough, resourceful, and fiercely independent, with a strong moral compass. She is mated to Adam Hauptman and serves as a bridge between the human and supernatural worlds.
