He was an English poet, writer and was considered one of the best dramatists of all time. He had written a total of 42 books. He is still a world-renowned writer as his plays reflect everyday events like family squabbles, falling in love, war, etc. Shakespeare’s most renowned books were Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Three Kings Night, and King Lear.

Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie is an English writer. She is famous for his world’s longest-running play – The Mousetrap. She has written over 85 books, including 66 detective novels and 14 short stories. Her most famous novels are Miss Marple & Hercule Poirot. According to the Guinness book of the world record, her novels have sold over two billion copies, only second to Bible and Shakespeare. As referenced by Guinness’s book of the world record, she was the most published author in a single year in 1979. Many of her novels made their way to telefilms; out of them was—A Hazard of Hearts. Her books made 500 million-1 billion record-breaking sales.



4- Harold Robbins

One of the best sellers of all time, Harold Robbins was an American-born Jewish citizen. He was given the title of “Dirty Old Man” as he was famous for tailoring racy novels. His novels were full of adventure, sex, history, and melodrama. Robbins had featured three of his stories as the British best-seller books — Where love has gone, The Carpetbaggers, and The Dream Merchants. He has written over 23 books and his writing made over 750 million sales.


5- Georges Simenon

When it comes to the crime writings, we’ll find Georges Joseph Christian Simenon above all. His work includes 200 novels, 250 novellas, many autobiographies, several articles & more than two dozen pseudonyms. Collectively, He had published more than 550 books. 6- Enid Blyton

Selling more than 600 million copies of her books, Enid Mary Blyton had been among the world’s best-sellers since 1930. She was an English-born writer famous for writing children’s literature. Blyton wrote on a wide range of genres, including history, child education, fantasy, and mystery. She was one of the most translated authors in 2018. Her famous works included Noddy, Famous Five, Secret Seven, and Malory Towers. Blyton was referred to as the most popular writer according to a survey between 10,000 eleven-year-old children in 1982.


7- Sidney Sheldon

Winner of 1948’s Oscar award, Sidney Sheldon was the author of 21 books. His writing genre included crime fiction, thrill, and suspense. His best-selling novels included Master of Game, The Other Side of Midnight, and Rage of Angel. Sidney Sheldon’s books have published over 600 million copies. Along with Oscar, Sheldon also won Academy Award for Writing Original screenplay in 1947, Tony Award in 1959, and Golden Plate Award (1990).


8- J. K. Rowling

Who doesn’t know about the most popular T.V. series; Harry Potter? Well, this series was written by the England-born writer—J. K Rowling. She is also the world’s first female billionaire writer. Her writing genres include fantasy and crime fiction. Living on welfare till 97s, she is now known as one of the wealthiest writers in the world. She has written over 15 books. Harry Potter is considered one of the best-selling series in history with 500 million copies. In 2009, she received France’s highest civil and military award, Légion d’honneur. In addition, she was recognized as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCPE) in 2011.


9- Gilbert Patten

Best known as the author of the Frank Merriwell series, William George Gilbert Patten was born in the U.S. in 1866. Patten has written over 209 books. His writing type was an adolescent adventure. Patten’s books have sold over 125-500 million copies. His pen name was Burt L. Standish, but he also wrote under pseudonyms like Lieut. R. A. Swift, Julian St. Dare, Morgan Scott, and Harry Dangerfield, etc.


10- Dr. Suess

Theodor Seuss Geisel, born in the U.S., was a populated author of Children’s literature. He began his career as a cartoonist and illustrator in 1927. Suess was best known as the author of many Children’s books like If I Ran the ZooThe Butter Battle Book, Green Eggs, The Lorax, and Horton Hears a Who! Geisel wrote more than 40 books, and he’s at the number ten of our top 10 best-selling authors of all time. As mentioned earlier, it’s challenging to organize the authors based on the sales of their copies. You can take the example of Mao Zedong, founder of the People’s Republic of China. This author’s publications had sales of over a billion copies, but we could not find any credible source to put him on our list of top 10 authors of all time.

Some other authors had also done notable work but were ineffectual to find their place in this list. These include Leo Tolstoy, Horatio Alger Jr., R.L. Stine, and Dean Koontz. In short, we can never justify any author as the leading one based on a few standards. Everyone has his own favorite writer.
